Food Poisoning Explained

All foods naturally contain small amounts of bacteria. But when food is poorly handled, poorly cooked or inadequately stored, bacteria can multiply up to a number large enough to cause a disease.

As you age, immune cells start to not respond so quickly and effectively to infectious agents. Children have an increased risk of illness because their immune system is not sufficiently developed. Diseases such as diabetes and HIV/AIDS and cancer treatments can also reduce the immune response, increasing susceptibility to food poisoning.

Food poisoning can cause many distressing. Between 1-6 hours after consumption of contaminated food or water, you probably have a common disease, symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea or stomach pain.

Self-care
* Rest and drink plenty of liquids
* Do not manage your diarrhea medicines because they may slow elimination of bacteria and toxins
* Light and medium disease frequently resolves itself in 12 hours

Warning
Botulism is a potentially fatal food poisoning. Is due to ingestion of food containing a toxin formed by certain spores in food. Botulinum toxin is most commonly found in home canning, especially green beans and tomatoes. Symptoms begin usually at 12-36 hours after eating contaminated food. Symptoms include headaches, blurred vision or double, muscle weakness and eventually paralysis. Some people have nausea, vomiting, constipation, urinary retention. These symptoms require immediate medical attention.
